2008 - The School Board approved the HIV/AIDs
Prevention Curriculum recommendation at the December
11th board meeting. Thank you to the Health & Fitness Task
Force for their work on this curriculum recommendation. The
new curriculum will be implemented this year in grades
5-12. Some highlights include:

5/6th
Grades – Brenda Goebel, our district nurse, will teach all
lessons for grades 5 and 6 this spring. She will work to
schedule a one-hour lesson for each 5th and 6th
grade classroom, to take place in May
·
7th
Grade – The one-hour lesson will take place in the Student
Life class in January and May/June
·
8th
Grade – The one-hour lesson will take place in 8th
Grade Science during second semester and will focus on Hep
A, B and C
·
9th
Grade – The lesson will take place in Health class, in
January and June, as a part of the comprehensive sex ed
curriculum
·
10th
Grade – The lesson, focusing on the science related to
transmission, will take place in a 10th grade
science class
·
11th
Grade – The lesson, including a documentary video and
writing activity, will take place in English 11
·
12th
Grade – The lesson, focusing on HIV/AIDs as a current world
problem, will take place in CWP first and second trimester
Copies of
the newly adopted lesson plans are available by calling the
MBSD Curriculum Office at 360-383-2013.
The
parent notification and dates of instruction requirements
vary by grade level. Notification will come from the school
and/or teacher.

5th/6th
Grades – Parents will be notified of dates of instruction by
either a notice in a school newsletter, a parent letter
mailed home, or a note sent home with students.
Notification will take place one week prior to instruction.
Dates of instruction will be determined by Brenda Goebel, in
coordination with each school.

7th/8th
Grades – Parents will be notified of dates of instruction by
either a notice in a school newsletter, a parent letter
mailed home, or a note sent home with students.
Notification will take place one week prior to instruction.
Dates of instruction will be determined by classroom
teachers.

9th
– 12th – Dates of instruction will be determined
by classroom teachers. A note from the teacher will be sent
home one week prior to instruction informing parents of the
date of instruction.
The
required annual parent information evening took place in
November. In order for parents to opt their child(ren) out
of HIV/AIDs Prevention curriculum it is required by state
law that they attend the parent information night to preview
materials. If parents were unable to attend they can call
the curriculum office (383-2013) to set up a time to preview
the materials.
