The K-12 Health and Fitness Review Task Force, comprised of teachers, staff members, community members, parents and administrators,  is reviewing the MBSD K-12 Health and Fitness program (curriculum, instruction, assessment and equipment) in order to create a recommendation for improvements to propose to the Superintendent and School Board in the spring.  This work is part of the regular MBSD Curriculum Review Schedule.

Details of the Task Force meeting schedule, purpose, timeline, plan of work and meeting notes can be found in the menu on the left.

Much of the work of the Task Force took place during the 2007-2008 school year.  The HIV/AIDs Curriculum Recommendation was presented to the school board in November 2008 and the full K-12 Health & Fitness Recommendation will be presented to the School Board in the Spring of 2009.

------------------------------------------------------

Dec. 15, 2008 - The School Board approved the HIV/AIDs Prevention Curriculum recommendation at the December 11th board meeting.  Thank you to the Health & Fitness Task Force for their work on this curriculum recommendation.  The new curriculum will be implemented this year in grades 5-12.  Some highlights include:

·    5/6th Grades – Brenda Goebel, our district nurse, will teach all lessons for grades 5 and 6 this spring.  She will work to schedule a one-hour lesson for each 5th and 6th grade classroom, to take place in May

·    7th Grade – The one-hour lesson will take place in the Student Life class in January and May/June

·    8th Grade – The one-hour lesson will take place in 8th Grade Science during second semester and will focus on Hep A, B and C

·    9th Grade – The lesson will take place in Health class, in January and June, as a part of the comprehensive sex ed curriculum

·    10th Grade – The lesson, focusing on the science related to transmission, will take place in a 10th grade science class

·    11th Grade – The lesson, including a documentary video and writing activity, will take place in English 11

·    12th Grade – The lesson, focusing on HIV/AIDs as a current world problem, will take place in CWP first and second trimester

Copies of the newly adopted lesson plans are available by calling the MBSD Curriculum Office at 360-383-2013.

The parent notification and dates of instruction requirements vary by grade level.  Notification will come from the school and/or teacher.

·    5th/6th Grades – Parents will be notified of dates of instruction by either a notice in a school newsletter, a parent letter mailed home, or a note sent home with students.  Notification will take place one week prior to instruction.  Dates of instruction will be determined by Brenda Goebel, in coordination with each school.

·    7th/8th Grades – Parents will be notified of dates of instruction by either a notice in a school newsletter, a parent letter mailed home, or a note sent home with students.  Notification will take place one week prior to instruction.  Dates of instruction will be determined by classroom teachers.

·    9th – 12th – Dates of instruction will be determined by classroom teachers.  A note from the teacher will be sent home one week prior to instruction informing parents of the date of instruction.

The required annual parent information evening took place in November. In order for parents to opt their child(ren) out of HIV/AIDs Prevention curriculum it is required by state law that they attend the parent information night to preview materials.  If parents were unable to attend they can call the curriculum office (383-2013) to set up a time to preview the materials.

Much of the work accomplished in the school district is the result of committees and task forces as well as through the continuous school improvement processes taking place at each school.  The work of these task force groups will include communication and collaboration with school leadership teams and staff and ongoing input from the community with membership consisting of representatives from various stakeholder groups.   Minutes of meetings will be posted on the district website and input will be solicited periodically throughout the processes.

Any questions related to the Task Force configurations or work projects can be directed to Trina Hall at 360-383-2011.
