ACME ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Acme Steering Committee Minutes

March 14, 2001

Members Present: Erika Alexander, Lillian Green Ellyn Erickson, Bob Baker, Shannon Brilhart

Members Absent: Chris Murray, Tom Smith, Linda Nieuwendorp (had a conflict with a bus run)

In Process:

1.                   ASC Communication Survey - The Annual ASC Communication Survey is completed.  All the data has been recorded on the original survey, the comments were all copied verbatim onto a comments sheet.  We reviewed the results and several recommendations were made.

A.     The information about the Parent Education Topics will be shared with Jennifer Lewis, the Readiness to Learn Grant Coordinator.  She will be able to use the information, as she plans parent education opportunities in the three elementary schools.

B.      The questions about Elementary Specialist will be shared with the Elementary Specialist Task Force.  We will ask the task force to include a brief article in the next community newsletter about where the district is in this project.

C.      The concerns about parking availability at Acme will be shared with Frank Cain in Maintenance.

D.     The general questions and comments will be addressed by Ellyn in a "Monday Notes" column called Glad You Asked.

2.                 Administrative Match Proposal - The ASC reviewed another project proposal made by staff to access Better Schools Funds as well as Administrative Match Funds.  Project #21 is a request for Paid collaboration time for the LDTech Grant ParaEducator and the classroom teachers.  The purpose of the project is to collaborate on the use of the grant technology for those students to use in completing regular classroom assignments.  It was approved and will begin as soon as the schedule can be determined.

New Items:

1.                 Technology Plan - The latest revision of the district Information Technology Plan was reviewed.  We were especially interested in the challenges of meeting the Student Learning Goals for Second and Sixth Grades without a Computer Lab Assistant to coordinate the acquisition of the benchmark skills.

2.                 Helmet Rules - We read a letter from the Whatcom County Health and Human Services department.  They are asking for schools to work with site councils and PTAs to require all bicyclists on school property to wear a helmet.  The department is offering training for bicycle safety and a program that helps obtain subsidies for the purchase of bicycle helmets.  Mrs. Erickson will contact them through the email address listed.  The staff will discuss this issue at their Spring Staff Workday for 2001-2002 Planning.

3.                 Parent-Student-Teacher Agreement - We reviewed and discussed a Parent-Student-Teacher Agreement that was shared with us through the special programs department.  Several teachers had brought similar agreements to Ellyn in the past year for our discussion.  The agreement is one that would be included in our parent/Student handbooks.  Individual copies would be signed by parents, students and teachers as a commitment to work collaboratively to help students learn and develop to their maximum potential.  Shannon offered to take it home and work on the formatting on her computer.  It needs to be more inviting.  We will design a handbook version as well as an individual student form.  This will come to the entire staff on the Spring Staff Workday.
