ACME ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Acme Steering Committee Minutes October 24, 2001 Members Present: Kathy Scodeller Jackie Ebert, Diane Leigh, Ellyn Erickson, Linda Nieuwendorp, Bob Baker, Libby Westdal, Lillian Green Members Absent: Tom Smith In Process: 1. ASC Packet – Next meeting we will reconstruct the changes made last spring. None of us can find the documents with the additions and corrections. 2. End of the Trimester Big Event – This has been scheduled on Friday November 30th. The WWU Dance Troup will perform for us that day. Pam Morrison is the professor of the program at WWU. Ellyn has been in contact with her and the group is available and excited to come to Acme. Negotiations will be made for the cost. Going rate is about $300 a performance. They are open to reducing that. We will give it a try. 3. Juice Machine - The ASC agreed with the staff decision to remove the current beverage choices. The vendor was contacted, staff surveyed and a new machine installed. There is bottled water available for $.35 each in the vending machine. New Items: 1. Pledge of Allegiance – We received an issue/concern from an Acme Parent. They voice concern that not all teachers at Acme School were providing students with the opportunity to recite the Pledge daily. We discussed the points made in the letter for national unity and the need for the pledge. We also discussed the state law that requires ALL classroom teachers to lead their students in the Pledge of Allegiance daily. Ellyn was directed to write a memo to staff reminding them of the responsibility to recite the pledge and to include the parent letter. That was done on 10-24-01. 2. 3rd & 4th Lunch – We received an Issue/Concern Form from a group of 3rd Grade girls. They voiced concern that during their lunch, sometimes students who were being quiet and behaving well were punished with loss of recess when other students misbehaved. This issue has been identified previously and the Kid Concern Team is meeting to develop an effective plan to monitor student’s behavior, reduce the noise level and provide an enjoyable lunchtime setting for all students. The ASC directed Mrs. Erickson to respond to the girls with a letter explaining what is being done to address their concern. That letter was completed on 10-24-01. 3. Safety Plan – The ASC has been directed by Mark Venn the Assistant Supt. To create a safety plan for the building. We examined what pieces currently exist as well as several model plans. Mrs. Erickson will draft portions of the safety plan and the ASC will review and revise those portions, as they are complete. We brainstormed unique situations that might occur here at Acme. We discussed the need to have specific plans to meet those special situations. 4. Acme School Performance Report 1999-2000 - We reviewed the report from 1999-2000. There is some inaccurate data in the edition that we had from the district office. Ellyn will contact Bev Eggers about revising those sections. We discussed the process of reporting for the past year and the challenges that it presents. Next Meeting: Wednesday, November 7, 4:30 PM in the Library Topics:
