ACME ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Acme Steering Committee Minutes (Rescheduled from February 26, 2003) Members Present: Jackie Ebert, Ellyn Erickson, Diane Leigh, Dick Vollmer & Betty Ensley Members Absent: Libby Westdal, Kathy Scodeller, Melinda Smull, Lillian Green, New Issues: 1. School Improvement Plan Progress - The School Improvement Teams are all working on plans for the remainder of the year and next year. The staff has selected Math as our main focus for the 2003-2004 school year. We will continue to support the growth made in Literacy and Climate, but the bulk of our resources, time talent and money, will be on Math. This year, the climate team has added Themes to our EOM Activity Days. So far we have celebrated Hat Day and Backwards Day. They have even more fun up their sleeve. The staff continues to support each other with Birthday celebrations, special lunches and surprise events. 2. Curriculum Night Survey – We reviewed the parent participation survey that we wrote in the fall. We need to know which curriculum night format to use in the fall. 3. Evening Conference Slots? – 46% of families requested evening time slots this spring. We decided to add a question to our parent participation survey to see what they do prefer. Then we will know whether to revise our evening conference time slots for two evenings instead of one in the future calendars. 4. Clothing Guidelines - We reviewed a student request for permission to wear noodle straps and belly shirts. Ellyn had responded with a letter that outlined the way that the guidelines were written and the rationale for having guidelines for clothing. The ASC decided to review the handbook next month. In Process: 1. Parent Communication Survey – What does this mean? Parents also feel very comfortable in our building. Staff and students are welcoming and friendly. There are a number of Parent Topics that would be of interest to our families. We will work with the Red Cross and other community organizations to set up evening opportunities for adults in the community. Generally our parents want us to continue our Monday Notes. They appreciate the timeliness (always on Monday, every Monday) and the content (varied). Parents are most appreciative of the communication tools used by the classroom teachers. They did not have a preference to the type, but definitely to the consistency of communicating both problems and successes in behavior and academics. In general parents enjoy and would like an opportunity to participate in curriculum content with their children at informative events. Reading, Science and Art were the most often selected topics. Next Meeting: March 26, 2003 Handbook Revisions, Parent Participation Survey Results, Conference Attendance Data. Other Topics to revisit:
