ACME ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Acme Steering Committee Minutes Members Present: Jackie Ebert, Ellyn Erickson, Diane Leigh, Dick Vollmer, Betty Ensley, Libby Westdal, Kathy Scodeller Members Absent: Melinda Smull, Lillian Green, In Process: 1. Curriculum Night Survey – 65 Surveys retrurned We tallied the 65 returned surveys. There was a clear preference for the combined Ice Cream Social/Curriculum Night style of evening. We discussed the possibility of scheduling this later than the first week and possibly using the Acme Plus Dinner format for increased family participation. That would give us an earlier start time also to fit in all the presentations. Ellyn will work with the teachers and PTA to set a date and determine the format. 2. Evening Conference Slots? – 65 surveys returned 46% of families requested evening time slots this spring. That information caused us to wonder if there was a need for more evening conference slots. In analyzing the survey information there was no clear preference for afternoon or evenings. We decided to continue with the single evening and four afternoons for parent teacher conferences next year. 3. Conference Attendance/Spring – This year we scheduled parent teacher conferences for 261 students. Of those scheduled we had attendance at 234 conferences. That gives us a 90% attendance rate based upon students scheduled. There were three (3) classrooms this trimester with 100% participation. The details break down to twenty-seven (27) students without conferences. Those students represent nineteen (19) families. Nine (9) of the "no shows" were Native Families. Out of our 36 Native American Students 25% did not have an adult participate in their conference. Classroom Percentages of Conference Attendance
SPRING 2003261 Students Scheduled for conferences – 90% attendance rate. 3 classrooms with 100% attendance participation 19 families and 27 students represented in the “No Shows” 47% of “No Shows” were Native American families- 9 families 4. Ellyn will take those portions to the individuals who need to make the changes. New Issues: 1. Red Cross SSI The Whatcom County Chapter of the American Red Cross is working with the MBSD to implement a School Safety Initiative. They have received a grant and a Vista Volunteer to coordinate the project. The first student involvement activity is a proposed workshop for Road Safety, Bike Safety and Home Alone Safety. They are hoping to provide one workshop in May. They are not yet certain about the format: After school or evening w/ a parent education component.
