Acme Steering Committee Minutes

Members Present: Jackie Ebert, Ellyn Erickson, Diane Leigh, Betty Ensley, Libby Westdal, Kathy Scodeller, Dick Vollmer

Members Absent:  Melinda Smull

In Process:

1. Title I & School Improvement Plan for 2003-2004 – Ellyn

The work that the Title I team did on Friday, May 23 will not change the School Improvement Plan.  There will be some changes in the delivery of Literacy services.  With the Title I school-wide approach, we can provide assistance in a classroom for non-identified students, as long as the assistance is Literacy based.  We talked about the use of Literacy blocks to help facilitate the use of para-eds and LST teachers in the classroom settings.  The movement of the Music classroom to the current Kindergarten classroom, coupled with the proximity of the Library and Computer Lab, group work in the hallway would not be effective.  There will be far too much traffic to keep at risk students focused upon a lesson in the hallway.  The use of flexible groups or stations in the classroom during the literacy block would be a more effective delivery model.

2. Tentative Class Configurations - Ellyn

Ellyn shared the current configuration plan.  The number of students in the 5th & 6th Grades created a need to do a combination there.  There are still large numbers in Kindergarten and First Grade, but we will wait until fall to see what needs to be done there.  We talked about the absolute necessity of keeping teacher and student assignment confidential until the fall.  Many times we have had to make drastic changes the week or day before school started.  Several times we have had to make changes after school started.

3. ICF from the Box!

We received an Issue Concern Form from a student asking us to consider placing a reader board in front of the school.  The committee decided to do several things in response.  Jackie Ebert will ask the Fire Hall if we can post information on their board.  Harmony has one, so we can check with their Principal for costs and permits.

New Issues:

1.  School Wide Discipline Plan - Ellyn

The new behavior plan for grades K – 2 was discussed.  The plan was presented in two documents.  One is the material that will be shared with teachers and teaching staff.  The other is the document that we distribute to parents at open house or curriculum night. We need to get that information to Darlene for inclusion in the new Parent Student Handbook.

Next Meeting:  September 24th, 2003
