Acme Steering Committee Minutes

September 29, 2004

Members Present:  Michelle Coburn, Jackie Ebert, Ellyn Erickson, Betty Ensley, Dick Vollmer

Members Absent: Diane Leigh, Libby Westdal,

New Issues:

1.  Membership – We need new members from the community, parents and Bus Drivers.    We looked at some letters to be sent to individuals that might be interested.  It was also decided to publish a message in the Monday Notes about our need.   Teachers will be asked to submit names of parents that might be interested in participating.

2. Review ASC & School Calendars – The ASC calendar and the Acme School Calendar were distributed.  It was noted that all but one of the ASC meetings will be on the Elementary Early Dismissals.  We are hoping that the timing might make it possible for a bus driver to make it to the 4:30 meeting time.

3. Review SIP Plan for 04-05 – The current School Improvement Plan was distributed and the highlights of staff development activities were discussed.  The Math team is sponsoring 7 sessions with Janet Mock on best practices in Mathematics.  The first session was Tuesday, September 28th and was very successful.  The Literacy Team is sponsoring a book study.  The first book has been selected.  We will read Strategies That Work.   It is an excellent book to help teachers understand and teach comprehension acquisition in students.

4. Beginning of the Trimester BIG EVENT – This year our first BOT BIG VENT will be the performance of the Nutcracker by the Nancy White Ballet Company.  This is an amazing production and we are thrilled to have the performance here at Acme.

5.   Distribute Handbooks – Several ASC members did not have the most current handbook, so those were distributed.

6.   Acme Secretary Search – There were 27 candidates for the position.  Five were interviewed and Michelle Anderson was selected.  She has served Acme School as a ParaEducator for several years.  We are very excited about her transition into the office.  Ellyn and Michelle will be attending a Breakthrough Coaching Training in November to help them learn how to effectively work as a team to  better serve the needs of the school community.

7. Elementary Early Release Days – This Wednesday was the first of 8 Elementary Early Release Days.  The purpose of the days is to provide staff members time to work together as they learn new instructional strategies and master new curriculum.  This week was amazing.  The energy and enthusiasm were high.  Teachers were able to really take time to make the necessary adjustments to help all of our students improve their learning.  The ultimate outcome will be increased student success.

In Process:

1. Elementary Report Card Project – The elementary report card committee is working diligently to create a reporting document that helps parents better understand exactly what our learning targets are and how are their students performing toward those targets.  Jackie Ebert in on the team and she will be presenting at PTA meetings in the near future.  We will make every effort to get parents out for those presentations.

2. Professional Development Planning - Teachers

The teachers’ contract requires all teachers to develop a plan for professional development every year.  They also provide $250 per teacher to support their plan.  This time of year Ellyn is meeting with each teacher to review those plans and to create an action time line to provide support toward those goals.  The support may be in the form of time, training or materials to reach those goals.

Next Meeting:     Review Discipline /Honor Plan

                             Review ITBS & WASL Results

                              Curriculum Night Review
