SUMMARY OF SCHOOL BOARD MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 9TH

 

The Mount Baker school board held its monthly meeting on September 9th in the Kendall School. The following is a summary of the meeting. Please contact Jerry Hunter, superintendent, for additional information.

bulletThe "Good of the Order" report was presented to the board. The report follows this page.
bulletJim Millson, Mount Baker school bus driver, presented a beautiful hand carved cougar to Steve Merz, principal of the Kendall Elementary School which has the cougar as a mascot.
bulletThe Instructional Materials Committee for this school year was appointed: Rick Gantman (or his designee for some meetings), Linda Scott, Tim Shepherd, Mary Pat Chellson, Rick Romito, Pat Bieber and Steve Merz.
bulletDr. Rick Gantman, assistant superintendent for K-2 educational programs, presented a report regarding the results of the spring, 99 "Washington Assessment of Student Learning" (WASL). The report has been provided to each principal. Copies may be obtained from the principal or from Dr. Gantman.
bulletAfter considering the enrollment data prepared by and the recommendations of the superintendent, the board authorized an one additional teaching period for the junior high school during the first semester and an additional full-time teacher for the Acme School for the rest of the 99/00 school year. Andy Hart was employed for the additional teaching period and Kim Oleson was employed in the Acme teaching position.
bulletBoard president Mike Brennan urged everyone to become thoroughly informed about Initiative-695 before casting a vote in the November general election.
bulletThe school board will attempt to schedule a meeting with legislators of the 42nd and 40th legislative districts in late October or early November. This meeting will be open to the public.
bulletThe board tabled a proposal to revise policy # 1240, "Duties of Individual Board Members." The proposal will be considered in a future work session. Copies of the proposed policy may be obtained from the district office.
bulletDr. Gantman presented information regarding policies related to recommendations in the curriculum audit. The information included a background file, existing MBSD policies, related school laws, proposed DRAFTS of policies, and definitions of selected educational terms. Copies may be obtained from Dr. Gantman
bulletThe board briefly discussed a committee structure for school district operations. Each board member would serve as chair of individual committees working on operational areas as identified by the board.
bulletThe board decided to discuss its policy re. "Minutes of Board Meetings" (# 1450) in a future work session that deals with "Duties of Individual Board Members."
bulletJerry Hunter and Rick Gantman presented written reports to the board. Copies of the reports are available from Jerry and Rick respectively.
bulletWORK SESSIONS HAVE BEEN SCHEDULED AS FOLLOWS:

September 30th

A. Identification of the "content points" that the board expects to be included in the block schedule status report that is to be presented in the October 14th board meeting.

B. DRAFTS of policies

bulletProgram Evaluation and Assessment (# 2130)

First reading of these polices is scheduled to occur in the October 14th board meeting.

October 8th

A. Academic Achievement policy # 2004. This received first reading approval in the April 8th regular meeting. Copies of this policy proposal are available from the district office. Second reading for this policy is scheduled to occur in the October 14th board meeting.

B. Additional work, if needed, on DRAFT policies # 2120, 2122, 2130.

1. WELCOME TO THE KENDALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

This first school board meeting in the new (actually the 4th) Kendall Elementary School is a special event for the Kendall community and the Mount Baker School District.

6. CONGRATULATIONS TO MARK CHALLENDER

Mark Challender, the technology network administrator, has qualified to be a Microsoft Certified Professional. The certification was earned through training and successful completion of a series of testing procedures.

7. THANKS TO DEMING AND MAPLE FALLS PTA FOR THE GAZEBO

The Deming PTA and the Maple Falls PTA provide funding for construction of the gazebo that is located on the north edge of the large play field at the rear of the Kendall School. The generosity of these two organization (that now have merged into the Kendall PTA) has provided a valuable addition to the out-of-doors facilities. It will be enjoyed and appreciated by students, staff, parents and community members for many years to come.

8. DISTRICT STAFF MEETING ON AUGUST 29th

We had an excellent "celebration" for district staff members on Monday, August 30th. Several staff members and students were recognized for their various accomplishments. Thanks to Josh Zender, MBHS ASB President, Mike Brennan, Rick Gantman, Mark Murray and Ross Wood for addressing the multitude. Thanks also to the cheerleaders who presented the colors. MANY THANKS to Judy Sande who coordinated the event. It was a great day.
