***MINUTES***

School Board Meeting - November 9, 2006

 

  1. Call to Order – Vice-President, Russ Pfeiffer-Hoyt called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm and led the Pledge to the Flag.  The meeting was held at the District Office.

 

Attendance:            Board Members – Jim Freeman; Russ Pfeiffer-Hoyt; Trish Hart; David Smith

                                                                  Ellen Dodson was absent and excused (arrived at 8 pm)

                                                                                         

                  Certificated Administrators – Richard Gantman; Charles Burleigh; Tim Yeomans

 

a.       Good of the Order –  

                                                               i.      High School students Allysa Maleng and Travis Zender recognized for volunteer work during the flooding in Acme.  They also both volunteer with Fire District #16 in Acme.

                                                             ii.      High School Performance of “Guys and Dolls”

 

2.       Approval of Minutes – Mr. Freeman moved and Mr. Smith seconded the motion to approve Minutes of the October 12th & 26th meetings.  Motion passed.

 

3.       Consent Agenda – Mr. Freeman moved and Mr. Smith seconded the motion to approve all items on the Consent Motion passed. 

a.       Personnel Actions – Attachment “B”

b.       Surplus Personal Property – Resolution #06/07:12

c.       Purchases over $7,500.00:

                                                               i.      Schetky Northwest - $98,400.79

                                                             ii.      Educational Student Tours - $34,770.00

                                                            iii.      Bellingham School District (Readiness to Learn) - $52,000.00

                                                           iv.      Blaine School District (Readiness to Learn) - $37,584.00

                                                             v.      Ferndale School District (Readiness to Learn) - $39,150.00

                                                           vi.      Lynden School District (Readiness to Learn) - $41,760.00

                                                          vii.      Nooksack Valley School District (Readiness to Learn) - $41,760.00

d.       Warrants audited and certified by the auditing officer as required by RCW 42.24.080, and those expense claims certified as required by RCW 42.24.090, have been recorded on a listing, which has been made available to the Board.  As of this day, November 9, 2006 the Board by a unanimous vote does approve the payment of those warrants included in the above list and further described as follows:  ASB Fund warrants #63 – 78 in the total amount of $11,737.02; Capital Projects Fund warrant #54 in the total amount of $760.00; General Fund warrants 90307 – 90420 in the total amount of $136,201.27; and Private Purpose Trust Fund warrant #1078 in the total amount of $45.00.

4.       Information from Board Members

Report on School Board Goals – School Board Portfolio – The portfolio provides accountability for progress the board is making in achieving its goals.  School Board members attended and/or took part in:

§         Trustlands Task Force

§         Whatcom Community Foundation – South Fork Valley Fund

a.       None at this meeting

7.       Action Items –

a.       Surplus Residential Property – Resolution #06/07:11 – Building at 5113 Mitchell Rd.  Mr. Smith moved and Mr. Freeman seconded the motion to approve the Resolution.  Motion passed.

b.       Interlocal Agreement – ESD 112 – Technology Purchases – Mr. Freeman moved and Mr. Smith seconded the motion to approve.  Motion passed.

 

8.       Policy –

a.       #3414 – Infectious Diseases – Consider for 2nd Reading & Adoption – Mr. Smith moved and Ms. Hart seconded the motion to approve for 2nd reading & adoption. Motion passed.

 

9.       Reports –

a.       Superintendent’s Report – Dr. Gantman written report included information on the following:

§         Response to inclement weather (flooding)

§         WASL Retakes

§         Lake Whatcom Watershed Lawsuit

§         Ready! for Kindergarten Program

b.       Business Manager’s Report –

                                                               i.      Donna Getchell provided written and verbal Synopsis and Fund Summary information to the Board.

11.   Executive Session – At 8:30 pm Ms. Dodson recessed the meeting and the Board went into Executive Session, estimated to last one hour.  The one item for discussion was Superintendent’s Performance.

 

12.   Adjourn – At 11 pm Ms Dodson resumed the meeting, and then adjourned.

Mt Baker Employees Honored by Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center

Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center honored 12 community members for their contributions to peaceful conflict resolution with their annual Peace Builders Awards.  Education division winners were Mt Baker School District Elementary School Counselors team: Chris Wermus, Art Clark, Elizabeth Kerwin and Pamela Fuller.  An article naming all award winners appeared in the Thursday, November 9 edition of the Bellingham Herald.
