The Mount Baker school board held its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, May 10, 2007 at Harmony Elementary School. The following is a summary of the meeting. Attachment “A” Good of the Order May 10, 2007 FFA Students Named Tyler Yost was named District 1 Star Farmer (District 1 covers Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, North King Co). He will compete for the State Star Farmer award to be presented at State FFA Convention on May 9-13. Tyler is also a state finalist for his Swine Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award. Brandon Larsen is a state finalist for the Fruit Production Proficiency Award.
FFA State Forestry The Mt. Baker FFA placed first at the State FFA Forestry Career Development Event in Chewelah, WA on April 27, 2007. Team members competed with other high school students in practicums including tree identification, tool identification, disease and pest identification, chainsaw troubleshooting, map and legal land descriptions, team variable plot cruising, compass course, general knowledge test, and present a forestry issue. Brandon Larsen placed 4th high individual. Other team members included Stefan Nelson, Scott Johnson, Derek Franks, and Clayton Isenhart. This was the first year for all team members participating in the event. The team was coached by Todd Rightmire, Agriculture instructor and FFA Advisor at Mt. Baker High School and Dr. Ron Dinus, a long time volunteer with the Mt. Baker Agriculture program. The students received a $1000 scholarship from the Stevens County Conservation District to travel and compete at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October. There were 13 teams from 11 schools participating in the career development event. FFA Livestock Judging Team Congratulations to the FFA Livestock Judging Team. They placed 5th out of 22 teams at their first contest at the Puyallup Spring Fair. Jesse Copps tied for 7th place out of 120 judges at the contest. Other members included Brian Davis, Clayton Isenhart, and Derek Franks. Members had to market grade live steers for carcass traits, present oral reasons to a panel of judges, and correctly place 6 classes of sheep, swine, and beef animals. |
