MOUNT BAKER SCHOOL DISTRICT #507 ***SUMMARY*** School Board Meeting - Thursday, August 9, 2007
Executive Session – 5 – 7 pm The Board met with counsel in executive session to discuss a legal matter.
Attendance: Board Members – Ellen Dodson, Jim Freeman, Russ Pfeiffer-Hoyt, David Smith. Trish Hart was absent and excused.

2. Approval of Minutes – June 28, July 12 and July 26. Mr. Freeman moved and Mr. Pfeiffer-Hoyt seconded the motion to approve all Minutes. Mr. Smith refrained from voting as he was not at the meetings of Minutes being considered. Motion passed 3. Consent Agenda – Mr. Pfeiffer-Hoyt moved and Mr. Freeman seconded the motion to approve all items on the Consent Agenda. Motion passed. a. Personnel Actions b. Surplus Personal Property – Resolution #07/08:2 c. Cancellation of Warrants – None d. School Food Authority Agreement – Fresh Fruits & Vegetables Program e. Purchases over $7,500.00: i. Washington School Risk Management Pool - $136,584.00 f. Approval of Accounts Payable for August 07 and Payroll for July 07 Vouchers audited and certified by the auditing officer as required by RCW 42.24.080, and those expense claims certified as required by RCW 42.24.090, have been recorded on a listing, which has been made available to the Board. As of this day, August 9, 2007 the Board by a unanimous vote does approve the payment of those vouchers included in the above list and further described as follows: ASB Fund voucher #1 in the total amount of $81.96; ASB Fund vouchers #346 - 348 in the total amount of $694.71; General Fund vouchers #17000 – 17026 in the total amount of $21,452.19; and General Fund vouchers #102395 – 102463 in the total amount of $49,733.08.
4. Information from Board Members Report on School Board Goals – School Board Portfolio – The portfolio provides accountability for progress the board is making in achieving its goals. School Board members attended and/or took part in: § Met with the Superintendent regarding gas line replacement § Discussed watershed restrictions § Card & gift from Board Members to ex-business manager, Donna Getchell § Received phone call from community about sex-offender notice § Mr. Pfeiffer-Hoyt attended a Western States Land Commissioners Conference in Salt City. This group is attached to the WSSDA (Washington State School Director’s Association) Trustlands Task Force. 5. Information from the Audience – a. Mr. Holterman invited everyone to play in the Athletic Booster Club golf tournament on Saturday, September 8. 6. Presentations – a. None 7. Action Items – a. Resolution #07/08:1 – Access Easement to Deming Dike – Mr. Pfeiffer-Hoyt move to approve Resolution #07/8:1, Mr. Freeman seconded. Motion passed. b. Resolution 07/08:3 – Inter-Fund Transfer from Debt Service to Capital Projects – Mr. Pfeiffer-Hoyt moved and Mr. Smith seconded the motion to approve Resolution #07/08:3. Motion passed. c. Release of Student Information to the Armed Services – Mr. Freeman moved and Mr. Pfeiffer-Hoyt seconded the motion to approve the release of information. Motion passed. d. Substitute Teacher Rate of Pay – Mr. Pfeiffer-Hoyt moved and Mr. Smith seconded the motion to approve the rate of pay. Mr. Freeman abstained, citing potential conflict of interest. Motion passed.
8. Policy – a. #2255 Alternative Learning Experiences – Mr. Smith moved and Mr. Freeman seconded the motion to approve Policy #2255 for 2nd reading and adoption, per changes made during discussion. Motion passed.
9. Reports – a. Superintendent’s Report – Dr. Gantman presented the Superintendent’s Report. Highlights of the report were: § Status of Maple Falls School Property § Whatcom County Library land acquisition § Forest Management Plan b. Business Manager’s Report

11. Executive Session – At 8:30 pm Ms Dodson recessed the meeting and the board went into Executive Session to discussion a bargaining issue. The meeting was estimated to last 10 minutes.

Maintenance & Grounds Personnel Work to Prepare for Staff and Students’ Return
Maintenance and grounds-keeping crews are working hard this summer to clean, repair and maintain district buildings and grounds for the return of staff and students in late August. While school doesn’t start until Tuesday, September 4, there are many staff and students on campus early for sports turnouts and classroom preparation and set-up, so our maintenance people are making sure everything is ready on time.
Mt Baker Ag Program
The Mt. Baker High School Agriculture Program was named Washington Association of Agriculture Educators Agriculture Program of the Year at the WAAE Summer Conference in Wenatchee July 9-13, 2007. This award recognizes all 3 aspects of an agriculture program including classroom instruction, Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE), and FFA. The award has been forwarded to the National Association of Agriculture Educators as a candidate for the Region 1 Award and results will be made public before the end of July.
And the results are:
Outstanding Ag Ed Program—The Mt. Baker High School Agriculture Program was named National Association of Agriculture Educators Outstanding Ag Ed Program in Region 1, which encompasses eleven western states.
All special award regional and state winners will be recognized at the 2007 NAAE Convention in Las Vegas December 11—15, 2007. Agriculture teachers, Todd Rightmire and Tamara Whitcomb will travel to Las Vegas to receive the award.
4-H, FFA Members Will Open Northwest Washington Fair on Monday, Aug. 13
Opening day of the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden will honor the hundreds of local 4-H and FFA members who contribute to the annual event.
“The Northwest Washington Fair is blessed every year by the contributions of our local youths and many of them belong to 4-H or FFA,” said fair manager Jim Baron. “Last year we had more than 700 4-H and FFA members enter approximately 6,000 exhibits in the fair. Their cows, horses, goats, hogs, dogs, chickens and so much more are among the fair’s top attractions.”
The “Blue and Green Parade” – symbolizing the primary colors of FFA (blue) and 4-H (green) – will start at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13. FFA and 4-H members will march with their chapter and club banners to the youth stage in front of the Henry Jansen Barn. At 11 a.m., the grand opening ceremony will feature welcoming remarks from local dignitaries, plus 4-H leaders and FFA advisors.
Following the ceremony, all 4-H and FFA members who participate in the grand-opening events will be thanked with priority-seating tickets to the Northwest Washington Fair’s grandstand concert featuring country-music star Clay Walker on Saturday, Aug. 18. They also will receive an ice cream treat from the Whatcom County Farm Bureau.
