Keep Your Doors OPEN !!!!

You are just starting high school and the choices you make in the 9th grade will impact your post-high school options.  To make sure that you are keeping "your doors open" use the checklist below as a guide to get the most out of your 9th grade year.

bullet

Make sure you have completed a tentative 5-year plan.  This is generally done during a freshman conference with student, counselor and parent(s) in attendance.  You will select the high school courses that you plan to take in grades 9 - 12 (plus you will include your plan for your first year out of high school).

bullet

Maintain a good Grade Point Average (GPA).   Beginning this year your grades are officially documented on your high school transcript.   The grades that you acquire this year will have a tremendous impact on your cumulative GPA. Take challenging classes. Talk to your parents and counselor about developing strategies for maintaining your grades.  Click here if you want to know how to calculate your GPA.

bullet

Start NOW - Get Involved.  High school offers a variety of opportunities to get involved in sports, clubs, leadership or volunteer work.  Not only does this help you stay connected to your school and community but these types of activities are extremely important for job, scholarship and college applications.  Mt. Baker High School has a Student Service Network that is specifically designed to help you locate volunteer opportunities.

bullet

Begin your Student Information Form. This is very useful keeping track of all of your activities, honors and awards. It will be very useful later for applying for scholarships, job and college applications.

bullet

Talk with your parents about your post-high school plans.  Ask their advise about your career options.

bullet

Go to Homework Help if you need it. Homework Help is an after school program available to all high school students.  On Tuesday's and Wednesday's during the regular school schedule there are two teachers available after school to help students with assignments.  Ask your counselor for details.

bullet

Research MBHS courses. Look through your course handbook for high school courses that will give you the skills for where YOU want to go.

bullet

Get career information.  If you need specific information about different careers or educational programs make an appointment to visit the career counselor or check out these career websites.  Students and parents can now access the Career Cruising career and college exploration program from home!  To access Career Cruising you will need the following username: mbhs and password: career when you get to their website:  www.careercruising.com

bullet

Thinking about playing sports in college? Be sure that you are taking ALL of the right classes that will make you eligible.  Ask your counselor!

How to Calculate Your GPA

Each letter grade is equivalent to the following numbers:
A    = 4.0
A-   = 3.7
B+  = 3.3
B     = 3.0
C+  = 2.3
C     = 2.0
C-    = 1.7
D+  = 1.3
D     = 1.0
F     = 0.0

Add your grades together and divide by the total number of grades.
Example:
                    A         4.0
                    B+       3.3
                    C-        1.7
                    A         4.0
                    D         1.0
                    F          0.0
                    B-         2.7
                              16.7

                               16.7 divided by 7 = 2.3 (C+ average)
