Junior Year "To DO" List if You Are Planning On Working Following High School:

September:

bulletContinue career interest research. The Career Center has numerous tools to help you determine which career fields "fit" you.
bulletTake classes that will help you learn the skills necessary to find employment in your occupation of interest.
bulletWill you make a "living wage" in this field? Use resources in the career center to find out this information.

October:

bulletBegin compiling information for your resume Use the Student Information Form and keep it updated every year.
bulletHave three people other than relatives who can write you a letter of recommendation.
bulletAre you taking any Tech Prep classes that you may be eligible to receive college credit for?  Check with your counselor.  These credits could work to your advantage in the future if you choose to get technical training for a higher wage job.

November:

bulletAsk about doing an informational interview, your Career Counselor can help.

December:

bulletIdentify the skills required to work in your field of interest. Use the Career Center resources.
bulletIdentify where you will get the needed skills.

January:

bulletTake an Interest Inventory. Use this information to locate occupations within your interest areas.

February:

bulletContinue to develop employment skills.
bulletMeet with your counselor to make sure you are taking AND passing all the classes you need to graduate.
bulletLocate specific employers in your field of interest and set up a "Job Shadow" experience.

March:

bulletAttend one of the School Tours offered to Juniors. Your plans may change before you graduate and these tours: The High School College Conference & Bellingham Technical College Campus Tour, offer valuable information.

April:

bulletTake the ASVAB test. It is a great aptitude test and can give you important information which will help you in choosing a career.  
bulletComplete your resume. The Career Center has software to help you create a professional resume and cover letter.
bulletTake the general college placement test given to all juniors during "Testing Week".  This test will give needed information about your skill levels needed for different occupations.

May - June:

bulletStart looking for summer employment opportunities in your career interest area.
bulletExplore volunteer options to gain experience.
bulletInvestigate local clubs or organizations that you can become involved in that are within your career field. The Career Center can help you with all of the above.
