Senior Year "To DO" List if You Are Attending a Technical College:

September:

bulletNarrow down your school choices. Visit the Counseling Center for information and assistance.  Be sure that the school has the technical training program you are planning to take. Directories are available in the career center to help with this process.
bulletKnow the DEADLINE DATES for all of the colleges you are considering. This information is readily available in the career center.
bulletAre any of your selected schools part of the Western Undergraduate Exchange program?  If so and you qualify you may save $$$$$ on out-of-state tuition.
bulletInvestigate scholarships, prepare a resume to use for letter of recommendation.
bulletAre you taking any MBHS courses that will count for Tech Prep credit?  Ask you counselor!
bulletUpdate your Student Information Form. This is useful for scholarships and college applications.

October:

bulletAttend one of the College Fairs. There is a wide variety of college fairs offered at the beginning of each school year.  Many are in the Seattle area and represent schools from around the U.S.  There is always one in Bellingham that hosts Washington state public schools.  Check the career center bulletin for specific information.
bulletCall the school and find out if there is a waiting list for your intended training program.
bulletCall the school or go to their website and find out ALL of the program requirements for your intended training program.  Are their any pre-requisite classes you must take?
bulletPlan to visit college campuses.

November:

bulletFill out school applications.  Click here to get the details about filling out applications to  technical schools .  Read directions on applications very carefully.
bulletAsk teachers, counselors, etc., for letters of recommendation for scholarships.
bulletArrange to visit the schools, if possible. The Counseling Center will have school phone numbers and addresses.

December:

bulletTurn in completed applications and fees, if required, to the guidance secretary. Most schools begin accepting applications Dec. 1, but always double check.
bulletBegin reviewing and compiling the information you will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You will need your current income tax information in order to complete the forms. Assistance with filling out the FAFSA is available in the Counseling Center.  
bulletAttend the Financial Aid Workshop in the High School Library.

January:

bulletMail FAFSA form. Be sure to keep a copy of everything, keep it together.
bulletCheck to see if the schools you are applying to also require an institution financial aid form. If they do, complete and mail in as soon as possible.
bulletThe Career Center has resources to help determine which forms each school requires.  For more information about Financial Aid click here.

February:

bulletContinue looking for scholarships to help finance your education. The Counseling Center has hundreds of scholarship listings. 

March:

bulletCheck with your counselor, make sure you are taking AND passing all courses needed to graduate.  Keep looking for scholarships.

April - June:

bulletAcceptance letters should begin to arrive. Once you have heard back from all the schools you applied to; decide which one you will attend.
bulletYou will need to sign up to take an assessment test before you can register for classes.
bulletBe aware that some community colleges register for fall classes as early as May of your senior year!
bulletComplete Tech Prep paperwork by June if want to receive college credits.
