K-6 Reading

Mount Baker elementary students are involved in reading every day in their classrooms for a variety of purposes.  Students read to build their reading skills through practice, to learn new information, and for pleasure and enjoyment.  Teachers spend time reading aloud to children and teaching them strategies to make sense of what they read.  Children read individually, with partners, and are often involved in “literature circles” or “book clubs” where they read the same book as their group and have guided discussions about what they are reading.   Talking about what they read helps students make sense of the text and makes reading more meaningful.
