Writing is an essential, lifelong skill which begins
very early and requires time, effort and practice to improve. Mount Baker
elementary students will be writing throughout the year for a variety of
purposes. They will write essays, reports, letters, stories, informational
text, and personal journals. Students are taught to use the writing
process of prewriting, drafting, revising,
editing, and publishing.
Students are also taught about the characteristics, or
traits, of good writing so that
they can clearly understand their strengths as a writer and how to improve
their written work. |

HOW FAMILIES CAN HELP AT HOME
 |
Emphasize
the importance of writing by letting your child see you as a writer.
You will be surprised how often you write—grocery lists, bill paying,
notes to family members, cards and letters, and perhaps journaling.
|
 |
Encourage
your child to write for a variety of purposes such as making lists for
grocery shopping or chores, writing letters to relatives, and notes to
tell you where he/she is going to play. |
 |
Ask your
child to read their writing to you. Even early writers can make up
meaning from their scribbles. |
 |
Show
interest in your child’s writing and praise them for a job well done. |
 |
Provide
your child with paper, pencils, and pens for your child to experiment
with writing. |
 |
Show an interest in the writing that your child
does at home and at school |
