(Student Learning Improvement Grant)

A Student Learning Improvement Grant (SLIG) was provided by the legislature to assist Deming to reach its related school improvement goals:

To increase knowledge and skill in the teaching of reading, writing and mathematics to prepare students to meet state reform goals.

Activities achieved to meet this goal during 1996-97:

• Inservices to become familiar with Reading and Math Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs), reading strategies and math concept development using manipulatives
• Purchase of novel sets to support reading strategies
• Purchase of materials to assist with the development of conceptual understanding of math
• Schoolwide evaluation of the effectiveness of our classroom reading programs
• Staff planning days to align classroom curriculum with EALRs
• Inservices on 6-Trait Writing Assessment and new state assessments in reading and math
• Practice taking and scoring sample state tests in reading, writing and math; determine test taking skills and curricular areas requiring continued emphasis
• Schoolwide Math Fair to inform students and parents of the components of Math EALRs with particular emphasis on connections to the real world

To create a schoolwide system for study skills instruction and homework.

1. Activities achieved to meet this goal during 1996-97:
• Inservice on study skills
• Creation of a schoolwide homework policy
• Purchase and examination of Study Skills Teachers Resource Guides. Creation of scope and sequence of study skills to be taught throughout the grades.
