Schools in Transition Grant

The new elementary school in Kendall creates many changes for families in the district.  In 1997, the elementary school attendance boundaries were changed for 1998-99 school year and beyond.  This year the change affected 45 Deming students who now attend either Harmony or Acme schools. In addition, several families opted to remain at Deming this year but will move next year.

Anticipating these changes, a sub committee of the Deming Elementary Site Council wrote a two-year “Schools in Transition” grant.  The goal of the grant is to support students and families through the closure of Deming and Maple Falls schools

Last year, students from Deming, Harmony and Acme Elementary Schools produced a theater piece entitled "Students From Outer Space" that focused changes.  Local drama artists Holly O'Neil and Meave Anne Naramore directed the production.  In addition, students visited their “new” school.

This year, Deming and Maple Falls students will work together on a tile project that will hang in the entryway of the new Kendall school.  The tile project is only partially funded so the committee is seeking additional funding to support this worthwhile project.  The grant also provides three meetings to keep the community updated on the progress.  The first community meeting was held on Tuesday, October 20, at St Peter’s Hall. Look for information on the next meeting sometime after winter break.

Current sponsors of the grant include Whatcom Community Foundation, Washington Mutual Bank, Whatcom Educational Credit Union, Lynden Transport Inc, the Deming PTA and the architect of the new school, Stewart + King Partnership.  Anyone interested in contributing to help fund the tile project, contact Christy Bell, Deming Elementary School 360-383-2040.

April, 1998

In January of 1998, the School District approved new elementary school attendance boundaries for the 1998-99 school year and beyond. Anticipating these changes, a sub committee of the Deming Site Council wrote a two-year "Schools in Transition" grant. The goal of the grant is to support students and families through the closure of Deming and Maple Falls schools. The grant is comprised of three components: Support for students, support for families, and support for staff.

Thus far partial funding has been received from Whatcom Community Foundation, Washington Mutual Bank and Whatcom Educational Credit Union.

The first activity for students involves kids from Deming, Harmony and Acme Elementary Schools in a theater production focusing on changes. In May, students from Deming moving to either Harmony or Acme will visit their "new" school and meet future classmates.

In year two, students from Deming and Maple Falls will work together on a tile project that will hang in the entryway of the new Kendall School. Parent/community meetings are scheduled several times each year to provide opportunities for people to meet and begin to form new communities.
