USDA Recall on Beef

On Jan. 31, 2008 the USDA issued a "hold" on some beef after receiving news of allegations concerning the treatment of cattle processed at the Westland Meat Company in California. According to the USDA, this was not a food safety issue at that time, but the supplier was being investigated for animal cruelty.

Following its investigation, the USDA issued a recall on Feb. 17, 2008 for all Hallmark/Westland Meat Company .  The USDA has now classified this as Class II recall "where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product."

Mt Baker has determined that we have 43 cases of the recalled beef.  This was beef we had placed on hold.  This will be destroyed according to USDA's instructions on February 25th with the local health department as a signing witness.

Please rest assured that the health and safety of our Mount Baker School District students is always our primary concern.

Thank you for you care and concern.

A BIG THANKS TO ALL THE WONDERFUL FOOD SERVICE STAFF FOR THE MANY ADJUSTMENTS THEY HAVE MADE TO CARE FOR THE STUDENTS AND STAFF AT MOUNT BAKER
