Curriculum Corner Trina Hall, Curriculum Director December, 2004 Excerpt from ESD 189 Express: Judging from all the recent positive comments and editorials in community and regional newspapers, the latest WASL results demonstrate a trend toward greater student achievement on all levels and all subjects. A headline in the Skagit Valley Herald Sept. 2 is typical: “Area school districts are encouraged by test scores.” In an Editorial Sept. 5, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer noted: “The new state testing results suggest that Washington’s students are sticking to their studies pretty well. . . . The Washington Assessment of Student Learning results show across-the-board gains in reading, math, writing and science.” Three days later, Gov. Gary Locke wrote in the Seattle Times: “The gains Washington students are making are further validated by recent strong performances on the SAT, the ACT college-readiness exam and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Such results are encouraging and show that our state is on the right track.” In a report, OSPI singled out 60 schools statewide for special praise because of noted WASL improvements in the three main categories — Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Among them were seven schools in the NWESD 189 region. Mt Baker Junior High was one of the schools recognized. See Principal Charles Burleigh’s remarks.
