Trina Hall, Curriculum Director September, 2005 With the start of the new school year kids are back in class meeting their teachers, reuniting with school friends and getting ready to learn new things. The curriculum office is in full swing also and working on several improvement projects to enhance student learning throughout the district. Four main focus areas for district improvement efforts from the curriculum office include the following: 1) New Elementary Report Cards 2) K-12 Science Curriculum Review 3) WASL Testing at grades three through eight plus ten 4) Continued efforts to support reading improvements district wide. Watch The FOCUS throughout the year for information on these improvement initiatives and to read updates as progress continues. Highlights of the Elementary Report Card project are described briefly in this issue. New Elementary Report Cards – Parents of elementary students will see new report cards coming home this year as a part of our district wide pilot of a standards based reporting system. Several classrooms took part in a small scale pilot last year and this year the use of the new report cards will expand to include all elementary teachers and students. The new report card is based on our state and district learning targets (or standards) and includes scores of 4, 3, 2, 1 rather than the traditional A, B, C, D. The new system will improve student learning as parents, students and teachers gain a better understanding of the learning goals at each grade and are able to communicate clearly with one another on student progress toward these goals. The district, schools and teachers will be working with parents and students throughout the year to better understand the learning goals and the new report card. Questions related to the new elementary report cards can be directed to teachers and/or school principals. You may also call the curriculum office at 383-2012. |
