September, 2006 Rick Gantman, Superintendent Progress Report on Improvement Efforts—I am pleased to inform you that Mount Baker School District is having an excellent start to the school year. The staff of each school met during the week before school to continue the important work of school improvement. The Mount Baker “Continuous School Improvement” method has helped staff use a formal process to identify and address specific goals. Acme Elementary School will focus on writing, Harmony Elementary will focus on math, and Kendall will focus on math and reading. The Junior High School will focus on writing and the High School will focus on reading. Having a school improvement goal means that staff will collaborate in a school-wide effort to make coordinated improvements in the goal area. Additionally, staff will maintain the improvement efforts in the other areas the school has worked on in previous years. School improvement is difficult work and Mount Baker staff is doing an excellent job in its commitment to making our schools the best possible for your children. Custodial & Maintenance Crews at work— Our maintenance and custodial staff did an excellent job getting the school buildings and facilities ready for students. Our mechanics and bus drivers passed the State Patrol inspection with flying colors. Our grounds crew has the athletic fields in great shape for fall sports and has worked to get the new field on the west side of Mitchell Road ready. We hope to have the new soccer field ready for fall of 2007. Finally, right before schools opened, all Mount Baker School District staff met in the high school auditorium to share information about school improvement and to participate in training on school safety and student health. We are looking forward to a great school year and hope that every parent and community member will find a way to be involved in the growth and education of our children. ~Rick Gantman~
