Trina Hall, Curriculum Director The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) has proposed an initiative that calls for local, state and national policymakers to ensure conditions that support comprehensive approaches to learning for engaging the whole child — promoting the development of children who are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. We continually answer this call in the Mount Baker School District by providing students with learning that is engaging, challenging and supportive and by offering extra-curricular activities and a safe and caring learning environment. As a part of the call to action, ASCD recommends a well-rounded curriculum for all students that provides access to learning in the arts, music, social studies and other broadening courses, stating that students with these opportunities are more likely to be engaged and do well in school. Our new Elementary Visual Arts Curriculum is a partial answer to this call. Adopted by the School Board last month, the curriculum includes a scope and sequence for grades K-6 that is aligned with the state learning targets for the arts and includes instructional materials to support teachers and students in acquiring these skills and knowledge. Another example of meeting this call is our K-12 music program that continues to excel in teaching students music skills and concepts. Any who attended district music performances this past month are first hand witnesses to the outstanding programs offered! Our improvement efforts in all curricular areas will continue to strive to meet ASCD’s call to action — providing students with meaningful learning experiences across subject areas that will ensure their success in school and in their futures.
