September 2007 A Vision for Excellence A new Mount Baker staff member recently asked me an excellent question in her efforts to get to know us: “What do I need to know about what is going on in Mount Baker?” That is an important question for her to have asked and an easy one for me to answer. First and foremost Mount Baker is unique in how we care about each and every student in our district. Certainly there are some schools and districts that care as much about their students as we do, but no one could care more! From our bus drivers concern for “their kids” at the bus stop, to our secretaries knowing what every student needs, to our teachers understanding of each individual, our food service workers looking after the nutrition of every child, our custodians and maintenance staff looking to maintain an excellent environment, and to our principals knowing every child, it is perfectly clear that Mount Baker knows how to care for every child! Secondly, it is clear that Mount Baker understands its obligation to consistently pursue excellence in every aspect of its program. Staff understands that this requires that high expectations are established and communicated and that formal and professional improvement methodologies are used to ensure progress is made. Additionally, I absolutely had to tell our new employee that in Mount Baker we are committed to teamwork for the greater good of our district’s students. It is obvious that every employee in Mount Baker understands that our students will achieve excellence only through the collaborative efforts of all of the adults in their lives. We are deeply committed to working together in professional and intentional ways so that every child can successfully pursue their dreams. Finally, I made it perfectly clear to our new employee that Mount Baker is a great place to live and learn!
