Trina Hall, Curriculum Director Did you know that each year we send our second, third and fourth grade students on a field trip to tour the Whatcom Museum? We’re able to do so thanks to the Allied Arts Education Project Grant and our on-going positive partnership with the folks at the Whatcom Museum. What do students do while there? Well, our second graders tour the Bird Exhibit and visit the Children’s Museum. Third graders, who study local history including Native American history and culture, tour the Northwest Coast Native exhibit and take part in a related hands-on workshop. (A special thanks to all the volunteers over the years who have helped with this part!) In the fourth grade our students take a tour in the Syre Education Center and focus on Design elements in art. Each of these tours are led by museum staff members ~ usually Mary Jo Maute and Richard Vanderway ~ who teach students to appreciate the works they see. In the fifth grade the arts tour changes venues, with fifth grade teachers taking their classes to Western Washington University to lead a museum-supported tour of the many sculptures found across the campus. As a follow up to the tours, each 2nd through 6th grade classroom also has a visiting artist come to their room for a 2-hour visual arts lesson. The visiting artist is provided through the Allied Arts Education Project. We value our partnership with the Whatcom Museum and are grateful for the years and years of their welcoming our students into the exhibits, buildings and teaching rooms. We look forward to many more years of this on-going partnership!
