The Mount Baker Cross Country program, currently coached by Dominic Urbano, has enjoyed a rich history of accomplishment and success since it was started in 1972 by Coach Jim Freeman. While MBXC was coached and maintained by Jim Freeman, his young male athletes brought home 19 league championships, 8 district championships, and 3 state championships. On the girls side, he coached 17 league championships, 6 district championships, and 2 state championships. In 1998, Mr. Freeman finally retired after 28 years at Mount Baker as the cross country coach as well as a math teacher. To take over the leadership of MBXC's outstanding program as well as to fill in Mr. Freeman's substantial shoes was quite a challenge, but Dominic Urbano faced that challenge with fighting determination and ambition. In just his first year at Mount Baker, Coach Urbano overcame the previous year's disappointment of failing to make it to the State Championships by leading the girls team to a 3rd place finish. In 1999, he coached the girls to their first state championship in 21 years and Mount Baker's only state championship in the 90's. The girls team then kicked off the new millennium with a repeat win, nicely finishing an undefeated season. Before the 2001 state meet Coach Urbano was honored by the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association as the Washington State Girl's Coach of the Year. He capped off the weekend by guiding the girl's to their third straight state title. The 2001 season also marked the return of the boy's team to the state meet. Their first trip since 1992. The outstanding Mount Baker Cross Country program continues to thrive as its runners improve and fresh talent takes the place of those graduated. |
