2007-2008 Physics Challenge Part I:  Paper Span

(25 pts)

Challenge:
To construct a paper "beam", with a minimum length of 45cm, that is capable of supporting a load of 0.98N applied to the center of the top of your "beam".

Materials:

  • 2 pieces of 216 mm x 279 mm paper MAX.

Limitations:

  • Beam must have a MINIMUM LENGTH of 45cm

  • Beam must be capable of supporting a 0.98N MINIMUM FORCE

  • Beam may consist ONLY of supplied materials

  • Beam weight must not exceed 0.093N

  • Beam must have an acceptable NAME

Testing:

  • Beam will be measured and analyzed to determine if it meets the basic length and construction requirements stated above.

  • The MINIMUM FORCE will be applied to the center of the top of your beam.

  • Additional loading will be applied to the beam until the beam FAILS.

Data:

  • Physical characteristics of your structure must be collected (height, length, depth, mass, weight, etc)

  • Physical dimensions of your beam must be detailed in a three-view drawing.

  • Load data must be collected

Scoring:

  • 20 pts: Basic expectations met

  • 0 to 5+ pts: Additional points will be rewarded based on the following formula:

[ ( Length * Force ) / 45 ] - [ 45 / ( Length * Force ) ] = Additional Points
