Challenge:
To build a structure that spans a minimum gap of 30cm and is capable of
supporting a minimum amount of sand, weighing 1.96N, from beneath the
structure.
Materials:
1 Plastic Cup
2 3"x5" index cards
3 Wooden splints
3 "Sani-Straws" with wrappers
1 Plastic cuvettes
3 Toothpicks
1 Wooden Dowel
2 Pipette Tips
1 "Kimwipe"
1m String
1 Small paper clip
a minimal amount of white glue or glue-stick glue
Limitations:
Structure must have a MINIMUM LENGTH of 30cm
Structure must be capable of supporting a MINIMUM amount of sand, weighing 1.96N.
Structure may consist ONLY of supplied materials
Structure weight must not exceed 0.2N
Structure must have an acceptable NAME
Testing:
Structure will be measured and analyzed to determine if it meets the basic length, weight, and construction requirements stated above.
The MINIMUM amount of sand will be put into the cup suspended below the structure.
Additional sand will be added until the structure FAILS.
Data:
Physical characteristics of your structure must be collected (height, length, depth, mass, weight, etc)
Physical dimensions of your beam must be detailed in a three-view drawing.
Load data must be collected.
Scoring:
20 pts: Basic expectations met
0 to 5+ pts: Additional points will be rewarded based on the following formula:
[ ( Length * Sand Weight (N) ) / 59 ] - [ 59 / ( Length * Sand Weight (N) ) ] = Additional Points
