Challenge:
To build a device that can absorb an impact from a wooden board dropped onto it.
Materials:
2 4" x 6" Index Cards
1 sheet 8.5" x 11" printer paper
2 mini-pipettes
2 small paper clips
a minimal amount of glue
less than 10 cm of scotch tape
Limitations:
Device must have a square base exactly 7.5cm on a side
Device must have a round top with a diameter of exactly 7cm
Device must have a total height of exactly 12cm
Any glue used to construct device must be completely dry before testing.
Device may consist ONLY of supplied materials
Device weight must not exceed 0.2N.
Device must have an acceptable NAME
Testing:
Preliminary design must be presented in a rough draft three-view drawing before materials are dispensed.
Device will be measured and analyzed to determine if it meets the basic construction requirements stated above.
Device will be placed in the designated target area and affixed to the target area with 4 pieces of tape, one at each of the bottom corners, supplied by me.
Device must not move from the designated target area during impact.
Ramp will be elevated to 30 deg and dropped onto the top of your device.
Device may not deform by more than 50%.
Data:
Physical characteristics of your device must be collected (height, length, depth, mass, weight, etc)
Physical dimensions of your device must be detailed in a three-view drawing.
% deformation must be determined.
Scoring:
20 pts: Basic expectations met
0 to 5+ pts: Additional points will be rewarded based on the following formula:
[ (0.2N / Total Weight) * 3] + [ (50% / % Deformation) * 3] = Additional Points
