Physics Challenges Expectations
For each
"Physics Challenge", in addition to completing the challenge, you will need to
do the following:
-
Describe your device and its intended function.
-
-
Draw a physical picture (See Chapter 5 in your
Physics book) of your loaded structure at the moment of failure.
-
Determine the magnitude and direction of all
the forces acting on your device at the moment of failure.
-
Draw a
free-body diagram of your loaded structure at the moment of failure.
-
Perform a
failure analysis
for your device and describe its actual function and "failure
mode" (failure cause).
-
Describe modifications you would make to your
structure to improve performance as well as lessons you learned during the
activity.
For Challenge II:
-
In your physical diagram, indicate the
magnitude and direction of the forces acting on each side of your
sand holder.
For Challenge III:
-
Determine the coefficient of static friction
between your device and the wooden board.
For Challenge IV:
-
Determine the amount of kinetic energy absorbed
by your device.
For Challenge V:
-
Determine the amount of kinetic energy absorbed
by your device.
-
Determine the velocity of your device at
impact.
