Ball and Hoop Physics Challenge

This assignment is worth 40pts.

You allowed to use the following materials:

  1. Ramp
  2. Ring Stand
  3. Clamp(s)
  4. Metal Sphere
  5. Table
  6. Paper
  7. Carbon paper
  8. Meter stick

The challenge:

You will work in groups of no more than three for most of this activity, but will be scored individually based on your success.  You will be required to roll a sphere down a ramp and through a small metal hoop.

bulletThe sphere must travel a minimum vertical distance of 100cm.
bulletThe sphere must travel a minimum horizontal distance of 75cm

Your sphere needs to pass cleanly through the metal hoop.  I set the height of the hoop, which will be different for each student.  You place the hoop where you determine it should go for a successful "shot".  Each student will be given ONE chance to get the sphere through the hoop.

If you are at first unsuccessful, you will be given an opportunity to get your sphere though a smaller diameter hoop.  If you are successful, you will be given an opportunity to get the sphere through a smaller diameter hoop at a different height for extra credit.

YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAVE ANY PRACTICE SHOTS WITH AN ACTUAL OR SIMULATED HOOP.  IF YOU ARE FOUND MAKING PRACTICES SHOTS WITH AN ACTUAL OR SIMULATED HOOP YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO ON THE LAB.
