Jam!
Instruments:
Each band will create four different instruments and write and play a song about standing waves.
The four different instruments will consist of: string, percussion, horn, and "other".
Each instrument must be capable of playing at different pitches and variable amplitude, and must be capable of sustaining notes (excluding percussion).
The approximate frequency, wavelength, and amplitude (of a given pitch or tone) must be determined for each instrument.
The position of nodes and antinodes (for the first, second, and third harmonic) must be labeled for each string of the stringed instrument.
The position of nodes and antinodes must be labeled for the percussion instrument.
Each instrument must be analyzed for the presence and location of transverse and longitudinal waves.
Each instrument must be analyzed for the presence and location of reflection, refraction, and diffraction.
The "other" instrument must internally exhibit sound reflection.
The "other" instrument must exhibit driven oscillation.
Jam Session:
Performed song must be about standing waves.
Performance must be at least two minutes in length.
Performed song must demonstrate instruments being played in-phase and out-of-phase.
Performed song must demonstrate instruments being played at high and low amplitudes.
Performed song must demonstrate constructive and destructive interference.
Performed song must demonstrate high and low frequency tones and rhythms.
Song lyrics must be about "standing" waves and written prior to performance (no "improv")
Each song must have one "solo".
Limitations:
No electricity.
All instruments must be built from scratch out of "found" materials.
All instruments must be audible at a distance of ten feet..
No Jazz.
Awards for:
Loudest instrument.
Instrument with the largest range of tones
Instrument with the longest sustain.
Best song.
