The Mount Baker program for highly capable students is designed to
develop the talent and ability potentials of young people by:
- Systematically assessing strengths,
- Providing enrichment opportunities and resources to develop the
strengths of our students, and
- Using a flexible approach to curricular differentiation and the use of
school time.
The Mount Baker School District Highly Capable Program provides a variety
of activities for students in grades 4-6. At different times, these activities can take
place: in the classroom, in a small group setting, or on an individual basis.
The small group instructional component is known as our Challenges and
Choices Program and includes instructional units in research, creativity,
problem solving, and higher level thinking.
Students can be nominated
for the program by parents, guardians, staff, or other students.
Nomination and screening take place in the spring and fall. Nomination
forms can be obtained in the Special Programs Office by phoning Gwen
Garrett at 360-383-2013.
Additional information on the Highly Capable Program can be obtained
by contacting Trina Hall, Curriculum Director, in the Special Programs
Office at 360-383-2013.
