Our
district’s composter (left) is
made from an old cement truck. It was named “Gertie”- short for the
regurgitator, by one of our staff members in a district-wide contest.
Gertie is able to hold a year’s worth of food waste from the
Junior/Senior high cafeteria. In the fall it is emptied
and we receive about 6 cubic yards of compost from would be food
waste. This year it will be used strictly for composting the
school's grounds and greenhouse waste.
Finished compost has been used in biology
classes, horticulture classes, in test gardens, to fertilize
shrubbery on the school grounds. Sweet peas (right) and
Sunflowers (below) thrive in the
amended soil.
