E-mail and
two-sided copies are used to reduce the amount of paper used. Overhead
projectors and whiteboards are used instead of paper whenever practical.
Substitute requests, office referrals, tardy referrals, transportation
requests, etc. are all available on the district’s intranet to use in
electronic format. Memos are almost exclusively electronic.
The publications
classes went to digital photography in 2004, doing away with
approximately $1500 worth of film and chemicals used for developing. By
using a local company for publishing, we have reduced our waste in
paper, CD’s and supplies, thus saving the district about $400.00 per
year – half of which is in postage fees.
The maintenance
department salvages and reuses working parts for repair work. It is
common that they use salvaged building materials in replacement and
construction throughout the district.
Composting by
itself removes over a third of a cubic yard of waste each day from our
Junior/Senior high campus. The cafeteria switched to compostable
containers in an effort to reduce waste – regardless of a higher cost.
