REUSE

Reusing items saves our district thousands of dollars every year in replacement costs and disposal fees. Reuse is one of the most popular aspects of our program. Regular collection of unwanted but usable items is carried out through the school year. Staff and students get first choice of these items. Items not used become surplus property through board approval and are then either loaned to home schooled students, other educational entities, or sold at auction. This procedure has greatly reduced the amount of waste produced in our district.

Reuse is an option used before demolition projects begin. Two buildings, one in 2003 and one in 2006, had reusable materials removed first by our maintenance department. In 2003 the building had much of its remaining reusable materials removed by the ReStore for resale. Over $5000.00 worth of materials and 30 cubic yards of material were removed. In 2006 a large outbuilding was auctioned. The buyer disassembled the building piece by piece for reuse of the materials. Last year our reuse program saved the district over $23,000.00 in replacement dollars.
