ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY

The Mount Baker School District has a computer network and offers high speed Internet access for academic use. Our goal in providing this service is to promote educational excellence through resource sharing, innovation and communication. In order for students to use the computer network, students and their parents or guardians must first read and accept the following acceptable use policies.

ACCEPTABLE USE

There are countless ways to use the Mount Baker Computer Network in acceptable ways.  These include, but are not limited to:

Internet research for projects and reports.

bullet

Subject-specific software.

bullet

Word processing reports.

bullet

Processing data on spreadsheets.

bullet

Creating and accessing databases.

bullet

Creating multimedia presentations.

bullet

Creating web pages and web sites.

bullet

Creating and editing digital audio and video.

bullet

Supervised use of the computer system for educational purposes.

This is not meant to be a finite list, but a short list of how computer and network technology can enhance the learning process.

 

 UNACCEPTABLE USE

The following behaviors are unacceptable when using the Mount Baker Computer Network.

bullet

Damaging school district resources in any manner.

bullet

Changing a computer affecting how others may use it.

bullet

Violating copyright laws.

bullet

Using another person’s password.

bullet

Trespassing in another person’s folder, work or files

bullet

Intentionally wasting resources.

bullet

Employing the school district’s resources for commercial purposes.

bullet

Viewing obscene or derogatory material.

bullet

Using the school district’s resources for gambling, extortion, pyramid schemes, chain letters.

bullet

Using the school district’s resources for advertising or political lobbying.

bullet

Installing software that has not been approved by the school district.

This also is not meant to be a finite list, but examples of actions that may result in disciplinary action.

Students are responsible for good behavior on school computer networks just as they are in a classroom or a school hallway. General school rules for behavior and communications apply.  Be prepared to be held accountable for your actions. Unacceptable use may result in a loss of computer network access as well as other disciplinary or legal action.

SAFETY & SECURITY

The Mount Baker School District filters the Internet and makes every attempt to prevent the viewing of inappropriate material.  This filtering is not perfect and students may still be able to view objectionable content.  It is the responsibility of the student to notify Technology Services or a staff member of objectionable content so better filtering can be accomplished.

Material created and/or stored on the system is not guaranteed to be private. Network administrators or other staff may review the system from time to time Students should expect that emails, material placed on Web pages, and other work that is created on the network may be viewed by a third party.

Notify the network administrator or a teacher immediately if you identify a security problem.

bullet

Do not identify or show security problems to others.

bullet

Never give out your last name, address, or phone number.

bullet

Never agree to meet in person with anyone you have met online without the approval of a parent or guardian.

bullet

Notify a school employee immediately if you encounter any material that violates this Acceptable Use Policy.

I have read and understand the school district policies relating to acceptable use of the Mount Baker School District computer network and the Internet.  I agree to abide by them. I further understand that any violation of the policies is unethical and may constitute a violation of law. Should I commit any violation, my access privileges may be revoked, school disciplinary action may be taken, and/or appropriate legal action may be taken.

I understand that this access is designed for educational purposes. However, I also recognize it is impossible for the school district to restrict access to all controversial materials and I will not hold the school district or its employees or agents responsible for materials acquired on the Internet. I hereby give permission to issue an account for my child and certify that the information contained on this form is correct.

I have read the policies relating to acceptable use of the Mount Baker School District computer network and the Internet and agree to promote these policies with my students Every attempt will be made to hold students responsible for use of the Internet and the network. As the supervising teacher I do agree to instruct the student on acceptable use of the computer network, the Internet, and related safety and security issues. With this knowledge, students are accountable for their own behavior.
