Here is a list of tasks that should be completed to learn how to process digital images.
q Task
1: Install the imaging software on your
computer.
q Task
2: Obtaining images with your digital camera.
We will gather and process several images to practice your
skills. Try to obtain images that you
will be able to use in your place study—either to demonstrate to students a
skill or to illustrate a concept. We
will begin building an image archive, which will hopefully be useful to you as
you plan and implement your place study.
q Set
the image quality on your digital camera to fine. Take several (2-3) pictures that you can use to practice your
image processing skills. Take at least
one of the pictures holding your camera at a 90 degree angle.
q Put the image quality back on standard and take 2-3 more pictures.
q Task
3: Adjusting images and saving them in an
image archive
q Open the image that was taken at a 90 degree angle.
q Rotate the image so that it appears right side up.
q Adjust the brightness and contrast of the image.
q Sharpen the image.
q Crop the image.
q Save the image in your image archive folder that you created earlier this week. You will probably want to rename it.
q Save another copy of the file as a GIF file. (You will need to reduce the number of colors to 256 first.)
q Task
4: Managing file sizes.
q Open an image that is of “standard” quality from your image file. Determine its file size.
q Make any adjustments for brightness, contrast, and sharpening that are needed.
q Crop the photo if necessary.
q Resize the image until you get the file size below 50K. Save this image in your image archive folder. Again you will probably want to rename it.
q Save a second copy of the image as a GIF file. (Remember to reduce the number of colors to 256 first.) Determine its file size. Compare it to the JPG file.
q Task
5: Obtaining images using a scanner.
q Scan
an image that is related to your place study.
Save it into the Image Archive folder. Determine its file size and type.
q Sharpen
and rotate the image as needed.
q Adjust
the brightness and contrast as needed.
q Resize
the image until you get the file size below 50K. Save it in your archive.
q Task
6: Obtaining images on the internet.
q Do a quick search on the internet to find an image or two that is related to your place study.
q Sharpen, adjust, rotate, and crop, as needed.
q Determine the file size and type.
q Save the file in your Image Archive folder.
