The Digital Tools project staff wishes to
congratulate Compass Alternative School, Harriet Thompson Elementary
School and McClure Elementary School in the Grandview School District
for joining our team. We welcome Compass Alternative School teachers, Peter Weron
and Rose Hamilton; Harriet Thompson Elementary teachers Julie Wysong and
Jo Hotchkiss; and McClure Elementary teachers Saul Marquez and Rob
Chambers to the project.
We
hope you all learn a lot about how to use digital tools to improve student
learning as well as how to improve your own technology usage competency.
Congratulations Grandview School District teachers!

Peter
Weron, Compass Alternative School
|
My name is Peter Weron. I teach at Compass High School in
Grandview. Compass is a small alternative high school,
consisting of about 120 students, three teachers, two part-time
teachers, and five instructional assistants
Grandview is a community of about
7,000 people located in the lower Yakima valley. I have lived in
Grandview all of my life, except for my years of military
service, and my final two years of college. I am a graduate of
the district where I now teach.
I graduated from CWU in 1996 with
endorsements in Math and Physics. Compass High School has been
my only assignment since I have been teaching. At Compass I am
responsible for the math and science courses, but also enjoy
working with the students in other courses.
My wife and I live on a small farm a
few miles out of Grandview. I enjoy spending my free time
working around the place, trying to learn to be a farmer as I go
along. Both my father and my father-in-law grew up on farms, and
are always happy to lend a hand, so I am able to glean a little
of their wisdom.
I am looking forward to this summer.

Rose
Hamilton, Compass Alternative School |
In the late 1930s, my parents "migrated" from the
Missouri Ozarks to Southern California where later I was
born. I attended public schools, grades K-12, in Los Angeles
and Porterville, California. I was graduated from Pepperdine
University with a B.A. degree in social science and speech.
Post-graduate learning also took place at Pepperdine with student
teaching in South Central Los Angeles. Today my immediate
family includes a grown son and daughter: She and her husband have
7-year-old twins. These grandchildren bring joy and unique
happenings to my life. My teaching has always been grades 7-12 in
social studies, language arts, and various electives. Each
school where I've taught has had a different setting:
underprivileged inner city, affluent Orange County, CA, mountain
town - Colville, WA, and now agricultural Grandview, WA. Currently
I teach in the Contract Learning Center at Compass High School.
Every day at Compass is like a total of all the other teaching
positions put together.

Julie Wysong,
Harriet Thompson Elementary School |
My name is Julie
Wysong. I was born in Omaha, Nebraska where I lived with my
parents and seven siblings. Washington is one of the many
states my family moved to and where I decided to stay.
While working at the Grandview Safeway I attended Central
Washington University after my high school graduation. I
continued to work at Safeway for the next 17 years as a Produce
Manager. While my education was put on hold I coached
softball, basketball, and volleyball for the local middle schools
as well as the Parks and Recreation programs. I returned to
college by participating in a Collaborative Program between C.W.U.,
Heritage College, and Yakima Valley Community College. After
graduating with my BA I went back to school to complete my
Master's Degree in Special Education. I am currently working
at Harriet Thompson Elementary. I have taught 6th, 4th, and
1st grade until this year I had the opportunity to
"loop" with my first grade students to 2nd grade.
I continue to keep involved in my children's activities. I
enjoy playing softball, riding horses, camping with the family,
and swimming in our pool.
