Mount Baker Kindergarteners are Ready to Learn!

Mount Baker Kindergarteners are Ready to Learn!

Across Washington State, during the first two months of the kindergarten year, teachers observe children in six developmental areas: math, literacy, cognitive, language, physical, and social-emotional. Skills are reported statewide by using the Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment tool and in the Fall of 2016, Mount Baker students were “right on top” of Whatcom County schools in terms of readiness.

Teaching Strategies GOLD is a component of WaKIDS, Washington State’s initiative to support children being “ready” for kindergarten.

The graph (above) was presented last spring as part of an annual “Dinner and Dialogue” event attended by 90+ preschool/kindergarten teachers and their administrators. At the end of the presentation, the first question from the audience was “What’s up with Mount Baker?” meaning what are we doing so successfully to support our children before they arrive in kindergarten?

Turns out, we’re doing a lot! Many thanks to district FAMILIES (every student’s first and most important teachers), preschools, and community agencies who support children before, during, and after their formal school experiences.

“Dinner and Dialogue” and “Family Connections” (see top article) are also components of WaKIDS. More information is available on the OSPI website.
