ABOUT BASE CAMP

You may have noticed that your student has a class called Base Camp on his or her schedule. The camp concept was first developed by the Franklin Pierce School District. Because of the success there, the program was replicated in a number of other districts around the state. The legislature is currently providing Mount Baker Junior High and Senior High with a grant to develop the Base Camp program for our district.

Base Camp is a life skills and planning curriculum for students in 7th and 8th grades. It aims to help students make clear, careful, and creative plans for life in school and beyond high school. Base Camp is designed to:

  • Encourage student engagement by building meaningful relationships between each student and at least one adult at school, thereby helping students remain engaged and motivated and lessening the chance for dropping out.

  • Enhance student achievement by helping students evaluate their own skills, interests, and accomplishments; successfully make the transition between elementary, middle and high school; and understand the relationship between school and life after graduation.

  • Involve parents or guardians by engaging them in students’ decisions, and sharing comprehensive information about students’ progress.

  • Increase the opportunity for all students to navigate through Mount Baker Junior and Senior High successfully.
