RESOURCES FOR TEACHING ABOUT EQUITY, TOLERANCE, & RACISM

A MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT MARY SEWRIGHT

This has been a heart wrenching time in history. Not only have we been dealing with the challenges of a pandemic, these past weeks we have experienced an ugly reality of issues that has been ongoing for hundreds of years - racism, bigotry, and hate.

Many of our children and families are trying to come to terms with the senseless murder of an African American man, George Floyd, along with Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, Philando Castile, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, Emmett Till and many others. Mount Baker School District stands strong with all people of color to denounce all forms of racism, bigotry, and hate. Anything less than justice for all is not acceptable.

We have compiled some resources for help in ways to learn about and discuss equity, tolerance, and racism. What we teach, discuss, and model for our children must promote love and compassion rather than apathy, indifference, racism, and hate. Regardless of our background we can all come together to ensure a better future for our community and country.
