Weekly Update from the Superintendent | 3/29/2023

Dear students, staff, families and community,

I would like to welcome Danielle Gray as our new District 1 School Board Member.  Her life-long commitment to public education started with her education in Mount Baker.  Her family represents three generations of MBSD alumnae, and she has two children who attend Harmony Elementary.  She is a professor and department chair at Whatcom Community College.  She applied for this position because she is grateful that she has been given so much by our community, and she wants to give back by leveraging her expertise in service of current and future students.

Congratulations to Harmony Elementary 5th and 6th-grade choir students. They performed with 7 other schools from Whatcom and Skagit Counties during the San Juan Music Educators Choir Festival.   The students rehearsed and performed under the guest conductor, Angie Kaspar from WWU.  Harmony students along with their choir director, Jessica Rodriguez worked hard to prepare for this event which culminated in many young voices combining for a wonderful performance.

Mount Baker has student athletes that compete in WAHSET D7 – Washington High School Equestrian Team District 7.  These students and their horses work hard all year long to compete in many equestrian events.  Last weekend the drill team won the gold medal out of all three meets.  Maddy Olson, Joelenne Deider-Wood, and Lily McNutt will be participating at the state level April 8 in Moses Lake.  Maddie also received eight gold medals in gaming and cow events along with a high point and reserve high point.  Our students did well with many personal bests.

Next week, April 3 through 7 is spring break.  My next Wednesday communication will be April 12 at 5:45 p.m.  Just a reminder that there will be a Community Potluck on April 10 at 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the EWRRC.

Have a wonderful spring break!

Sincerely,

Mary Sewright, Superintendent
