Weekly Update from the Superintendent

View all Superintendent Updates for the 2023-24 School Year.

Dear students, staff, families and community,

We observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, the Caribbean, and Central South America. Here is a link for more information.

I would like to share something personal and professional with you this evening.  Earlier this summer I made the decision to retire at the end of the 2023-24 school year.  Although I shared it with the School Board before the end of the summer, I waited until this past week to share it publicly at a School Board meeting. There are a few factors that have influenced this hard decision.  In the past year I have suffered some losses that made me take a hard look at my priorities, bringing me to the conclusion that I need to be closer to family members. Another consideration is that during my 40 years of service as an educator, I have maintained a retirement plan that will allow me to retire at 62 rather than 65 without penalty. Finally, I want to retire while I am still young and healthy enough to enjoy it.

I love the Mount Baker School Community and will remain a fan and supporter of our students!  I am also proud of the work we have accomplished together including navigating COVID, implementation of multi-tiered systems of support, focus on belonging and student voice, outdoor education, capital projects, and the many opportunities we provide for students. I am so grateful for this community and all the support you have given me for the past five years.  Thank you, Baker!

The School Board will be developing a plan for my replacement.  I will support the District in any way possible to ensure a positive transition in leadership.

This was a very difficult decision, but I believe there are other projects I can take on at this point in my life to support public education.

As always, GO BAKER!

With gratitude, respect, and pride,

Mary Sewright, Superintendent
