Weekly Update from the Superintendent | Back-to-School Events & Information

August 24, 2022

Dear students, staff, families and community,

School starts for grades 1-12 in one week.  I hope everyone is ready and excited to embark on a great year.  If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s school.  Office staff, counselors, and administrators are available to assist you and ensure that your child has a positive start to the school year.

Tuesday, August 30th there are several events happening.  Each elementary school has a social at 2:30 p.m.  This is a great time to meet teachers, connect with transportation staff, and get questions answered before the first day of school.  Mount Baker Junior High has an orientation for 7th graders and new 8th graders from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.  Mount Baker High School has a 9th grade orientation from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  This is a great time to learn where classrooms are located as well as other logistics to make the first day of school a great experience for everyone.

We have new students and returning students enrolling which is great news.  You may see some class lists with high numbers.  When this is the case, we will bring in extra support for those classrooms to start the school year.  We don’t always know the true numbers until we start school because we are not always informed about students moving or not returning to school.  Please know we will be watching class sizes very closely and making adjustments as soon as we can determine the true number of students enrolled.

As your Superintendent, it is very important to me to do my very best to keep you all informed and be as proactive as possible regarding communication.  This is why you will receive weekly communication directly from me until the majority of you tell me you are tired of hearing from me.  I am also available to talk with any of you at any time.  If you hear rumors or things that just don’t make sense, reach out to me by email or at (360) 617-4600.  I will always respond!  Speaking of rumors, I would like to nip one in the bud that is apparently circulating on social media.  I am not putting litter boxes in bathrooms!  Again, there are no litter boxes in bathrooms anywhere in Mount Baker School District.  I have no idea who is spreading this rumor, but I hope we can all agree that this is absolutely ridiculous.  Seriously, if you hear something that does not make sense or concerns you, a quick email or call directly to me can clear things up.  I am here for you.  Reach out and talk to me.  Let’s not waste time on rumors when we need to spend our time ensuring all of our students feel a sense of belonging and well-being at school.

I hope to connect with you all at some of our upcoming events this Tuesday and at our athletic events that are getting underway soon.  As always, thank you for your support and making our school community a great place for students, staff, and families!

Sincerely,

Mary Sewright, Superintendent
