Weekly Update from the Superintendent

Dear students, staff, families and community,

I want to remind everyone that there is no school for students this Friday, January 13 due to a professional development day for all staff.  Monday, January 16 there is no school in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  All schools have assemblies this week to celebrate and recognize the positive impact this great leader had as the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement.

There are many activities happening, and I am seeing and/or hearing about our students doing awesome things.  I am excited to share with you a specific student accomplishment that to my knowledge has never happened before in Mount Baker School District.  Edith Contreras Moreno who is a senior at MBHS was selected to be part of the National Honor Choir.  This level of achievement takes more than just the talent and intelligence that Edith is gifted with as a student.  It takes countless hours of hard work to learn songs and scales for rigorous auditioning in competition with students throughout the United States.  Edith will perform with 100 other voices in Cincinnati next month.  Congratulations Edith!  We are so proud of you!

There are some after school opportunities available to junior high and high school students at the Van Zandt Community Hall hosted by the South Fork Valley Community Association.  We have a bus route that goes to the Van Zandt Community Hall after school that students could ride with parent permission.  Here is a link to our website for more information.

Enjoy the upcoming four-day weekend!

Sincerely,

Mary Sewright, Superintendent
